On a visit to Kent, Canterbury should be one of your first ports of call. A world-famous cathedral city and pilgrimage site since the Middle Ages, it’s filled with historic attractions from the Roman city walls and ruined seventh-century abbey to the magnificent cathedral itself. But, any historical tour of the county should also include Hythe. One of the original Cinque Ports which supplied England’s medieval navy, it’s also the home of the Royal Military Canal, which was built to defeat Napoleon and has its own fascinating and chequered history.

On a visit to historic Hythe, there’s only one place to stay: the splendid Victorian Hythe Imperial Hotel. Considered the cutting edge of luxury when it was built in the 1880s by the then South Eastern Railway, it’s still thought of in the same way now. Facilities including an 18-hole golf course, a pool, gym and spa, two restaurants, a champagne bar, and an afternoon tea parlour make it hugely popular for everything from weekend breaks to special occasions, as well as one of the best wedding venues in Kent.

How to get here from Canterbury

The Hythe Imperial is about 30 to 40 minutes in the car from Canterbury, but not difficult to find:

Take Old Dover Road south-eastwards away from the town centre for about a mile, then turn right onto Nackington Road by the cricket ground.

Follow Nackington Road out of Canterbury, past the Chaucer Hospital and over the A2. The road will become Faussett Hill and, after about two miles, at the junction with Redhouse Lane, will bear sharply left and become the B2068 Stone Street.

Keep going for about ten miles until you come to the roundabout at junction 11 of the M20. Take the second exit here onto the A20. Then, almost immediately, take the first turning on your left onto the A20 Ashford Road.

After about half-a-mile, turn right onto Sandling Road. Follow this road for about two miles, as you pass Sandling station on your left and then come into Saltwood. Follow the road through Saltwood as it becomes The Green, School Road and Tanner’s Hill. You’ll pass Saltwood Cricket Club on your left.

 

At the crossroads with North Road, turn left onto North Road, then right at the junction with Station Road about 200 yards further on. After about another 200 yards, take the first exit at the roundabout onto the A259 East Street, then turn right after 100 yards onto Twiss Road.

Follow this road for another two miles. Shortly after it goes over the Royal Military Canal, you will see the hotel on your left.
