How you wear your hair on your big day is, for many brides, as important as finding the perfect dress. With these fabulous looks, you won’t be following the trends, you’ll be setting them.
A tiara is an obvious choice when it comes to accessories, but the options are endless: hair chains, jewels, crystals, pretty clips, combs…the list goes on. A flapper-style headband can look amazing on short hair, while ribbons create a storybook heroine look, or boho feel depending on how you wear them. Going for an exotic, alternative look? Try a white silk turban, headscarf or lace headband.
Again, there are many options here, from delicate small flowers to dramatic floral headpieces or crowns, or just a single flower beneath which your veil is pinned. If you’re getting married abroad, why not incorporate local flora into your look? Or you can weave in artificial leaves and berries to complement an autumnal wedding theme.
If you have long hair, plaits are a traditional favourite and come in all shapes and styles. You can twist your plaits around your head for a Victorian look, opt for a pretty French or Dutch braid, or take a relaxed approach with small plaits in loose hair, which are ideal for showing off your long locks while keeping them off your face. There’s plenty you can do with a ponytail too: side ponytails produce a relaxed effect, curly ponytails a more glamorous feel, or try a long ponytail tied in several sections for a boho look.
Buns have so many variations, from a classic, smooth ballerina bun or sock bun to a loose up-do or a complicated, braided spiral. Both bun and parting can be positioned either on the side (go for the side that will be facing your guests during the ceremony) or in the centre depending on the look you;re going for. One unusual and stunning option is a bow bun, where you tie the hair in a ponytail, then divide it in two and make a bow. For any bun, even a loose one, hairspray is your friend, and you may want to keep extra pins on hand throughout the day to tidy up stray tendrils.
Curls are a favourite with many brides thanks to their versatility. From loose, tousled waves, using sea salt spray to create texture to tight spirals or charming ringlets, they create volume and interest. If you have long hair, a mass of curls swept over one shoulder looks amazing; curling just the ends of short hair creates adorable glamour in a few minutes. Artificial curls – added with tongs or straighteners – work best in naturally wavy hair; if you’re straight-haired, be sure to apply lots of hairspray to keep them in place.
