Over the years, many same-sex couples have held their weddings and partnership celebrations at the Hythe Imperial Hotel.
So why is it such a popular choice?
We think it’s a combination of things. The openness and diversity of our staff. The relaxed expert wedding planning team. Our tailored packages created for same-sex weddings. And of course, it might have just something to do with the hotel’s stunning building and gardens, set beside the Kent coast.
The Hythe Imperial Hotel is committed to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for all couples. This includes making sure that you, your family, and your friends are all warmly welcomed from day one.
Gay, lesbian, trans and gender non-conforming people have existed throughout history. And they have fought for visibility and acceptance for centuries. But until very recently, only male-female weddings were recognised by UK law.
Around the world, slow progress was made. A major landmark came in 1989 when same-sex unions were recognised by the government in Denmark.
By the 1990s, ‘blessings’ or ‘commitment ceremonies’ became popular for many British gay and lesbian couples. These were the first steps on a long road…
The first country in the world to fully legalise same-sex marriage was the Netherlands in 2001. However, it took a few more years before British people had this equality.
In 2004, the Civil Partnership Act allowed UK same-sex couples to legally enter a binding partnership. In 2013, the Marriage Same-Sex Couples Act went further, finally allowing same-sex couples in England and Wales to marry.
So officially, same-sex weddings have only been available in this country for 10 years. We think there’s some making up to do!
