From wedding packages tailored for same-sex couples, to a team with years of experience planning gay weddings, find out why the Hythe Imperial is the perfect choice.
A warm welcome to all
You’ve said ‘yes’. But where will you say ‘I do’?
Over the years, many same-sex couples have held their weddings and partnership celebrations at the Hythe Imperial Hotel.
So why is it such a popular choice?
We think it’s a combination of things. The openness and diversity of our staff. The relaxed expert wedding planning team. Our tailored packages created for same-sex weddings. And of course, it might have just something to do with the hotel’s stunning building and gardens, set beside the Kent coast.
The Hythe Imperial Hotel is committed to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for all couples. This includes making sure that you, your family, and your friends are all warmly welcomed from day one.
Gay weddings in the UK – a little history
Gay, lesbian, trans and gender non-conforming people have existed throughout history. And they have fought for visibility and acceptance for centuries. But until very recently, only male-female weddings were recognised by UK law.
Around the world, slow progress was made. A major landmark came in 1989 when same-sex unions were recognised by the government in Denmark.
By the 1990s, ‘blessings’ or ‘commitment ceremonies’ became popular for many British gay and lesbian couples. These were the first steps on a long road…
The first country in the world to fully legalise same-sex marriage was the Netherlands in 2001. However, it took a few more years before British people had this equality.
In 2004, the Civil Partnership Act allowed UK same-sex couples to legally enter a binding partnership. In 2013, the Marriage Same-Sex Couples Act went further, finally allowing same-sex couples in England and Wales to marry.
So officially, same-sex weddings have only been available in this country for 10 years. We think there’s some making up to do!

Old and modern traditions
The good thing about an LGBT+ wedding at the Hythe Imperial is that you can rip up the rulebook and do things your way!
Many of the old wedding traditions stretch back hundreds of years. But with a modern gay or lesbian wedding in Kent, it’s up to you both how many you want to incorporate into your ceremony and celebrations.
Maybe you both want to walk down the aisle. Perhaps one of the grooms wants to carry flowers. You can be ‘given away’ by your best friends. Or your auntie can do a speech.
You can also tailor your wedding vows any way you want, so they are 100% personal to you.
Every couple is different, and we love that. The expert wedding team at the Hythe Imperial can tailor all the elements you want as part of your Big Day.
Together, we can make the perfect wedding that you will both remember for the rest of your lives.
