The sense of magic that accompanies Christmas makes it fabulous time of year. It’s no surprise, then, that some couples swap the promise of sun in the summer months for a winter wedding. But are there different aspects of planning that need to be taken into account? We explore some key elements of the perfect Christmas wedding in Kent.
Unlike in the unpredictable British summer, you can guarantee the weather will be cold in winter. That means choosing a venue which can host every part of the day, from the ceremony to the dancing. Hotels are a great choice as they offer rooms for the festivities to place, as well as overnight accommodation for the wedding party. They also tend to open for more of the Christmas period, giving you more options for dates.
Christmas is traditionally associated with reds and greens, but that doesn’t mean you have to use those colours on your big day. The on-trend colours for winter weddings in 2018/19 are silver and white, which give a nod to Christmas and wintertime but keep the décor bright. Crystal accents lend a bit of sparkle to the occasion.
When it comes to flowers, calla lilies and red roses are go-to winter blooms, but there’s no reason why you can’t opt for something a little more colourful. Irises have a beautiful blue/purple hue that will complement silver and blue décor, while peonies add a splash of colour that’s sure to offset winter weather.
Mulled wine, egg nog, hot chocolate, warm apple cider…all are popular choices for a Christmas wedding, but if you want to shake it up a bit, why not serve smoked rosemary run punch, which combines golden rum with zesty citrus fruits and a smoky rosemary syrup? Or treat guests to an Applejack Sazerac, made with warming ingredients like apple brandy and maple syrup.
Mini pigs in blankets and mince pies always go down well at a winter wedding, but they aren’t the only option. Other Christmassy canapés might include roasted chestnuts or Yorkshire puddings with beef and horseradish. If you want to push the boat out, warm venison scotch eggs are delicious and impressive, while for those keeping it simple, try serving hot soup served in espresso cups. Brie and cranberry tartlets are a tasty vegetarian option, and for the kids – little or big – a bowl of chocolate coins is always popular.
Christmas classics such as those by Bing Crosby or Slade are sure to get everyone in the spirit after dinner. If you’re unsure what to have in the background during dinner, however, an a capella group singing carols is a fun way to keep guests entertained, or go for a mellow sound by hiring a harpist. You could always request that Vivaldi’s ‘Winter’ or Korngold’s ‘Serenade from Der Schneeman’ be part of the repertoire.
